Week 1 - Research, investigate and generate ideas. |
It helps to begin with few constraints. Explore the suggested artists on the exam paper, to help you some of the artists and examples of their work can be found on the suggested artists list on this site.
To begin with start with the Theme 'Recover' and mind map all that you can think of connected to this theme. Don't worry about going off at a tangent at this time, be creative and enjoy thinking laterally. You should not be designing a final piece! try to resist the urge at this early stage to plan a final piece. AO2 - Research Begin with a close look at the suggested artists. Who's work do you like the look of? Next complete these 4 tasks:
|
Choose a theme: Below you will find a list of Themes to help guide your thinking and your work.
Recover from conflict
People are displaced, families separated and homes destroyed by civil war. Countries and people recover and rebuild.
Families, friendships and other relationships can break up for many reasons. Recovering from painful separation can be emotionally traumatic.

Recover to renew:
Decorative fabrics could transform an unattractive surface or space.
Discarded or forgotten objects can be recycled, reclaimed, renovated or reused.
Books and old furniture are repaired and covered with new fabric to make it look unused or new.

Recover artefacts:
As a result of digging and scraping away the earth, artefects which have been hidden for years are recovered.
Valuable works of art are discovered in a dusty and cobweb filled room of a deserted building.
Hidden treasure or treasured items are recovered.
A skeleton is discovered with personal objects, a forensic team is called in to examine the evidence.

Recover from poor health:
Cosmetic surgery, or other techniques, can be used to repair or conceal physical disfigurement.
Patients lie in hospital beds recovering, beds surrounded by life saving technology with wires and tubes connected to machines.
Viruses and disease attack our immune system, but our body chemistry is powerful and can recover and fight back.

Recover forgotten memories:
Recover objects from the past that trigger memories.
Traditions and customs may be rediscovered from the past through celebrations, music, food and decorative costumes.
People remember dreams they had forgotten.
Bad memories are sometimes put to the back of the mind, occasionally they can be brought back by an experience, an event or seeing a photograph.

Recover from disaster:
After a storm has ravaged a land or country, properties, trees, vehicles and wildlife lay scattered. People, animals and birds emerge from places of sanctuary and start to recover.
Famine strikes a nation. Families gather at a refugee centre and queue for food. Crying children, desperate parents wait patiently for medical help.
Boarded up shop fronts, deserted building sites and for sale boards populate the city. Bold and colourful posters, advertising price cuts to attract customers while politicians talk of economic recovery.

Week 2 - Begin to develop your idea through drawing and experimentation. After this week Board 1 should be complete.
It is very important that you begin drawing and experimenting this week even if you are not sure what your final piece might be. Below is a task list but you will need to apply it to your chosen theme. Remember to speak with your teacher and mentor to receive guidance but you have to do the work!

Week 3 - Continue to develop your idea through experimentation and drawing. Board 2.
This week (A01& A03) draw from your photographs, and/ or use different materials to show that you can control different materials and experiment visually in different ways, for example:
Pencil Colour pencil Pastel Tissue paper Textured paper Water colour Ink and wash Pen Collage You should be able to show experimentation using at least 3 different mediums. The board below is a good example of quality experimentation and layout. |
Week 4 - Board 2 should be nearly completed this week. Now you need to develop process and begin to finalise ideas.
Here is a list of standard techniques and Processes you have used on the IGCSE course you need to develop your work using at least one of the processes listed below.

Week 5 - Show off your skills!
Practice, practice, practice. The best way to show off your skill level is to keep producing pieces that link to your theme. Use CAS time to come back and develop a piece of work or finish it off. Look to give yourself sufficient time to produce quality work, focus on the details.
Week 6 - Refinement of ideas and final design
Your last board should show experimentation and refinement of ideas. Look closely at the example project above. The project begins with a theme of 'Vanitas' and still life. The project begins in a traditional way, the student produces some copies of 'Vanitas' still life's with skulls and books. Next the student takes photos of places and objects around school that represent themselves this is again a feature of 'Vanitas'. However in the final board ants, beetles and onions appear! The student did not just have one idea....the idea developed into a new idea, she represented the things she hated or was scared of in the final board. The theme was still 'Vanitas' and the style remained 'Still Life' but the idea had developed. Your idea needs to develop if you want to achieve a top grade.
